Japan is one the largest consumer countries of olive oil, with more than 50.000 tonnes.

The World Olive Oil Exhibition is the biggest fair exclusively devoted to the international olive oil trade.

A Japanese trade mission headed by Mr. Toshiya Tada will attend the World Olive Oil Exhibition (WOOE) on the coming 12th and 13th of March 2015 at IFEMA (Madrid). Mr. Toshiya Tada is the Chairman of the Olive Oil Sommelier’s Association of Japan (OSAJ) and is in charge of the organization of OLIVE JAPAN, currently one of the most prestigious olive oil competitions in the world.

Nowadays, Japan is one of the most important markets for the olive oil sector. According to the data of the International Olive Council (IOC), Japanese olive oil consumption has risen by 30% and has reached 56.218 tonnes, amounting to almost 250 million Euros.

Thus, Japan is ranked as the forth importing market, just after the United States (290.000 tonnes), France (100.000 tonnes) and Brazil (72.000 tonnes); and ahead of countries such as China, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, Germany or the United Kingdom.

In Japan, olive oil was initially associated with Italian cuisine, very popular in this country. However, this has been gradually changing, and now, it is frequently used to cook typical Japanese meals such as sushi, sashimi, tofu, or tempura. Today, olive oil has become the second most consumed fat, just after canola oil.

For the first time, Spain becomes the largest olive oil exporter with nearly 26.500 tonnes, ahead of Italy with 24.750 tonnes (44%), and followed a long way behind by Turkey with 3.900 tonnes (7%) and Greece with 560 tonnes (1%).
